Youth Financial Empowerment
Investing in the financial education of teens and young adults is an investment in the future stability and prosperity of our communities and economy. Recent research shows that nearly 9 in 10 U.S. adults said high school did not leave them sufficiently prepared for handling money. Eighty percent of U.S. adults said they would have had a better start with money if they learned more about personal finance in high school.
The Peninsula Family Service (PFS) Youth Financial Empowerment Program gives young people ages 13-20 groundwork knowledge and skills they need to make informed financial decisions, avoid debt and predatory lenders, and build more successful futures. When teens understand budgeting, saving, investing, and responsible credit use, they are better prepared to navigate the complexities of the financial world. PFS Youth Financial Empowerment matches the suite of financial tools and resources in our Financial Empowerment program that teach adults how to build financial stability.
Many teens do not have access to financial education resources at home or in school, leaving them vulnerable to financial pitfalls and a lifetime of financial distress and trouble. Without proper guidance on money management, kids often adopt the financial attitudes and behaviors of the adults around them. When they are introduced to financial literacy early on, they become less influenced by these adult attitudes. Learning essential money management skills at an early age helps young adults retain and apply these skills throughout their lives. Early financial education fosters a healthy relationship with money, a crucial and enduring skill. PFS seeks to bridge the financial literacy gap that affects underserved communities whereby parents are unable or unprepared to impart good financial skills.
PFS Youth Financial Empowerment provides comprehensive financial education and tools through 2-hour weekly evening workshops over a 6-week period, equipping teens with the confidence and competence to manage their finances effectively. By supporting Youth Financial Empowerment, you are supporting knowledge building to improve economic outcomes, contributing to brighter, empowered and more successful futures for everyone. The workshops currently run during the Fall and Spring semesters in Daly City and San Mateo, and PFS is seeking funding to expand this critical programming throughout San Mateo County and into Santa Clara County.
Join us to help PFS reach more communities and schools so that teens are prepared to take better control of their finances and learn behaviors to build assets and achieve long-term financial freedom and greater success in their lives.
100% of the proceeds will benefit PFS clients.
